Later this year I'd like to travel LHR->JFK in PE travelling with a friend.

I have enough miles to purchase a reward flight. I guess one way to do this if I want to earn tier points myself is to book a full fare PE and then select companion PE flight for the friend.

There are people here far more seasoned than me in the best ways to work this, however when I last checked it was actually cheaper to pay for both PE tickets in the discounted class rather than the high rate needed for the companion flight, which defeats the object really.

Any advice appreciated.

There aren't many V-Flyers who are fans of companion fares. ;)

There are a lot of variables here, I think that you have to do the maths on each occasion. I think it is usually better value to book two cheaper (points earning) PE flights, but not always.

We are well overdue for a PE sale right now, but nothing is guaranteed on that front.

Personally I only use my points for UC redemptions, but the views of others may vary. :D

I agree with Nick (where have we heard that before...!) that in my opinion miles are best used for UC rewards, but obviously each to their own.

If you still want to earn TP's, then how about buying an L fare economy ticket and then upgrading to PE with miles. Again there might not be that much difference between an discounted K PE fare, especially when you add the taxes to the L fare, but still worth checking.
