PE -> UC Upgrade Possibility with Miles?

Hi,

I'm due to fly LHR -> LAX in June, currently in PE fare code K. I'll probably upgrade the return trip but was wondering what the likelihood of being able to upgrade to UC for the outbound flight at the airport, ideally with miles & cash for the applicable taxes.

I think that unless they have a real need to upgrade some people it may prove expensive. I tried this a couple of years ago when I knew the UC cabin had hardly anyone in it, and was quoted £1500 a ticket to move to an upgradeable class from K before I could use any miles to actually upgrade.

technically you can't use miles to upgade a K fare but at the airport things happen that the rules normally preclude.

You can only ask.

Yes, you may be lucky at the airport if they have over-booked PE, but normally even there you would need an S ticket to be able to upgrade.

P.S last time I upgraded a return leg (PE - UC) to teh UK with miles, the taxes came in at about $25-30 dollars I seem to remember.

I recently upgraded both legs of LHR-HKG at the airport from PE to UC. Ticket was originally booked in K & they upgraded the booking class at the airport for £163 +20k miles at LHR & £253 + 20k miles at HKG (the nice ticketing agent at LHR didn't charge a change fee as I was only changing the booking class).

One piece of advice is to get there super early. Outbound was looking wide open a couple of days beforehand but by the time we checked in there were only 4 UC seats left (lots of staff on the flight).

On the return UC was full a couple of days beforehand but we decided to chance in and again arrived super early (about 4 hours). I have a feeling we got the last 2 seats in UC.
