Having witnessed someone do this very act, I only have sympathy for the poor witnesses, especially children who had to see someone do this.

If someone wants to end their life, they should consider doing it on their own and not in front of children and witnesses who will have to live with it for years to come.

I also appreciate that anyone who does this is not generally of sound mind and I hope he now gets the help he needs.

(I mean no offence by my post, clearly I feel rather passionately about this, having experienced someone doing this in public many years ago - it is very damaging to witness, especially for children.)

I agree not at all good for the pax who saw this and the CC who dealt with it as well.

Also an issue of how he got a razor throughs security in the first place. So lots of questions for the Home Office and it's agencies to answer !

Luke you would be surprised at the number of people who do this sort of thing are of full sound mind and are perfectly aware of what they are doing and why they are doing it. Though of course he will receiove a through psychiatric evaluation.

All this chap has done is delay the inevitable i.e his deportation.

These people are so desperate not to be deported back to their own country that they will do anything. Not pleasant at all and what a major headache for the groundstaff having to sort out hotels for a full passenger load.
Have often seen escorted deportees on LOS flights kicking and screaming - it's very unsettling for the other passengers.

Here is the BBC Report

If the paramedics could glue the cuts together and he's back in the detention centre it indicates he wasn't that badly hurt.

This must have been an awful thing to witness v(

My thoughts are with the passengers and crew

Clearly, Gatwick security took it that as he had been escorted onto the aircraft he was "clean"

I am sure there are others who have similar stories, but was witness to a deportation LCY-CDG on my way to NCE some years ago where a "special" pax sat directly behind me, although I did not realise it at the time. The flight was loaded with pax as usual (steps, no airbridges at LCY) and then a car drew up at the steps on the tarmac from nowhere and the "special" pax was escorted up.

I assumed at first he was VIP, but it turned out not quite in the way I expected. I had no clue about his real status until we arrived at CDG where there was a black maria waiting for him at the steps, where he followed me down, gave himself up to la Gendarmarie and was cuffed on the spot. Glad I didn't have chance to strike up conversation, "so what do you do?" I am sure the crew must know in advance if they have such pax. Certainly on this occasion, they left him to himself onboard. No meal service etc.

A) As many others have said before, it must have been a terrible distressing experience for anyone close by to have witnessed this.

....at the same time.....

'B) I love human nature's ability to make light of a bad situation. Both these comments cracked me up :D

Over on a.net a lot of people are commenting that disposable razors are actually allowed through security perfectly fine. Clearly depending how desperate one is, they will find a way of getting a razor blade out of a disposable razor. Not 100% sure how accurate this is, and dont have the time to goggle it now. But may be an answer to security issues.

I too have seen this on VS flights, this being a deportee. It was on an LHR-MIA flight, the guy boarded before pre boarding and the most amusing bit about it, was that as soon as people saw him being boarded (read escorted onto the flight) people all stood up and started crowding the gate area!!
