I want to fly from Manchester to New York (don't care which airport at the moment) When i book via Virgin Atlantic it goes from MAN via Heathrow then over to NY, which is fine. However it wont allow me to book PE seats =\ basically it just says "We were unable to find any flights for the dates you selected" for any date i select, but i can easily get PE seats if i'm flying directly out of Heathrow it seems ?

Give VS a call to book this. I imagine the search engine is looking for seats from MAN to LHR in PE, of which there aren't any.

Have you thought about flying direct on a codeshare with CO? Although that would only be Y or J class thinking about it.

I may be wrong, but I think the direct Continental flight from MAN to EWR is on a 757. Something to consider because I know I wouldn't be rushing to spend 7 hours on a 757 v(

Hi Sarah

Unfortunately the website is rubbish at doing this. There is a "flight connections" button available but this uses Dohop and puts the connections on a separate PNR which you do NOT want.

If you call up you can get domestic sectors and then the Virgin PE sector all on the same PNR. They will most likely offer you BMI connections, BA is possible too. Depending on how far away and what time your flight is you might want to consider doing the MAN>LHR the night before. BMI run far fewer shuttles now and can't stop bu**ering about with the schedules either. BMI to VS connection a T1 to T3 transfer, BA to VS is a T5 to T3 transfer.

yeah all these connecting flights confuse me =P
My boyfriends parents live near London, so it maybe a good idea to just get a train down to them for couple of days n have them run us the LHR. It would make the whole thing seem easier to me =P plus the fact i hate flying, so the less planes involved the better ;)

i wouldnt be rushing to spend 5 minutes on a CO plane over a VS one :D

Flabound - I quite agree, but the thought of a narrow-body 757 across the pond does not endear itself!

With travel, it's always wise to make plans based around whatever will be the least stressful option.

Connecting flights at Heathrow shouldn't be too bad, but if you do decide to do it, allow yourself plenty of time i.e. 2-3 hours.

The problem with the direct flights from MAN is that there is no PE equivalent, so its either economy or business (first or business first on CO). If you want enhanced economy it has to be indirect VS PE or BA WT+.

OK AA is not VS but actually if I had a choice of MAN-LHR-JFK on BD and VS in PE I'd actually just do the direct MAN-JFK on AA in Y. Yes it's not great, but is it worth the extra 3 or 4 hours and hassle? Also AA 767s are kitted out with new IFE and are not that bad ... IIRC!

The daily AA MAN>JFK is still on the 757s. Only ever done it once and felt really claustrophobic in economy. All in all think its worth getting to London to fly VS PE, personally I would drive now rather than use a connecting flight though.

I've done JFK in a 757 and it was absolutely brilliant. Mind you, that was with EOS (if anyone remembers them!).

Plus if you take Virgin Trains down to London you can earn FC miles at £1:1mi.

I flew to EWR with CO on the 757 in April. I was in business but nevertheless had no issues being on a 757 and it was one of the better J classes I have travelled in. For convenience flying from the North it's pretty hard to beat and personally I'd take it over a jaunt down south and then to New York. I suppose the fact it was a miles redemption helped but the 757 was no trouble at all.

I'm also in the "fly direct" camp. If I had no alternative but to go out of LHR, then I'd get there (from nr. Sheffield) by train. I'd never contemplate doing an internal from Manchester.

But as long as there is a direct flight over the pond from MAN - and fare/availability is good enough, then that's the way I'd go, regardless of which airline/equipment.
