Amenity kits

This has been bothering me for some time, what do others think?

Over the last few years, I've traveled econ/PE/UC with VS and the amenity kits, to my mind, are a complete waste of resources...

The content and quality of these has diminished (especially in UC), and now, are they really worth the bother and cost?

Why, oh why, don't VS just make things available, either within the cabins, or by coming round with baskets etc, rather than giving out default, useless kits.

For example, on my last trip back from BGI in UC, I only used the ear plugs. Now then, what happened to the rest of that kit? Was it re-used - I bet it wasn't.

Surely, would it be better to have more comprehensive inflight amenities available via demand, rather than by default?

I accept that this may increase workload for the CC, or maybe not, depending on how it was done, but I can see lots of benefits to doing this another way.

Any thoughts?

Ha ha, so their ploy has worked.
Over the years they have made them worse so now you think why do they bother?
What would be better was if they held the standard and still provided a quality option.
Anyway, it wasn't that long ago they did come around with products in baskets but that didn't last long either?

Of the current product I usually keep the shoe bag as I find it useful to chuck my stuff in when going to the pool. Earplugs I use but carry my own anyway. They eye shades I put on for a few hours. I do put the socks on rather than getting my own covered in cabin muck.
The toothbrush and toothpaste is handy too so I actually used everything

Basket of goodies - bean counters chopped that. But I agree with you. I always use the socks and toothbrush/paste, but after 36 flights this year I don't have that level of need for shoebags, vs the once a year traveller who might?

We all agree the AK is miserable, I for one would like to see your approach taken.

I agree. I've lost count of the number PE amenity kits I've come home with, having only used the earplugs.

I do wish they'd bring back the basket of goodies in UC. It was a nice touch; the current amenity kit is pretty disappointing.

Perhaps it's time to launch a concerted campaign to bring him back to the fold? We could lure him with a spurious thread claiming that VS are to provide Paul Smith designed amenity kits.

quite dissapointed. For us non FFs, the AK is something to go oooh aah over.

Got a great little washbag with posh smellies when flying business with EK last year, was hoping for some of the same with VS.

Zero in the CH (the hand wash and moisturiser are the large bottles) so do what us seasoned Upper PAX have to do these days and that is BYO.

As someone posted on here a while back, the only think worth taking (well requesting) from the CH onboard is a stash of lime wedges for the G&Ts (rather than the awful lemon slices too frequently offered :$ )

I asked the receptionist at the treatments desk and she was happy for me to take one of those nice long slim sliver pens with the red tail fin.

There are also the jars of humbugs and shortbread biscuits behind the TV area - I'm not a great fan of the descent Love Hearts. (By the way I'm not suggesting you take a whole jar!)

Shame about the loss of the basket. That surely can't have been very expensive for VS to provide to UC pax.

On Air NZ they lay out a table of goodies for PE and UC pax to help themselves and that seems to work well. If I remember correctly it has ... chocolate (from NZ), fresh fruit, biscuits, playing cards and pens. Their AKs are much better too. I still have some of their lip salve tubes (well my wife does) and their eyeshades are much more comfortable than the VS ones. I carry my ANZ set with me to use on VS flights.

My kids almost emptied those (very large) sweet jars last time we were in the CH. Kept them hyper for the whole week...
