Hi,
I wondered, I get a good discount booking through other channels than the VS website, as long as I book the right fare code can I use miles to upgrade on the website once I get my locator code from Virgin? Or is it only available if you book for Virgin direct?

I've never had the option to upgrade before on the website when booking through this way, but that maybe to do with the fare code ?

yes if you get the right fare bucket and there is a reward ticket available then yes it is possible.

However, it is unlikely that tickets bought from anyone other than VS would be in the right bucket to allow you to upgrade using miles.

If you look at the codes here the-toolbox/fare-codes in the V-Flyer toolbox you can see which buckets (=code letters) can be upgraded. Click on each letter for the explanation.

As Tonty says discount tickets from sites other than Virgin are unlikely to be upgradeable.

I would be very careful with this as I think that it has to be a Virgin Atlantic "published" fare.
You can get discounted tickets in the correct fare buckets through consolidators or travel agents or corporates but you can't upgrade on them unless they are Y or W.

4.5.8 Qualifying fare levels for Economy to Premium Economy upgrades and Economy Companion tickets on Virgin Atlantic flights (see table above for country of fare origin restrictions):

Only full adult fares apply

- Any Economy fares booked in Y class apply including Virgin Atlantic published, discounted, corporate, travel agent or tour operator type fares.
- Only Virgin Atlantic published Economy fares booked in B, L, or M class apply. All other ticket types such as but not limited to discounted, corporate, travel agent or tour operator fare types are NOT applicable.

4.5.9 Qualifying fare levels for Premium Economy to Upper Class upgrades and Premium Economy Companion tickets on Virgin Atlantic flights (see table above for country of fare origin restrictions):

Only full adult fares apply

- Any Premium Economy fares booked in W class apply including Virgin Atlantic published, discounted, corporate, travel agent or tour operator type fares.
- Only Virgin Atlantic published Premium Economy fares booked in S class apply. All other ticket types such as but not limited to discounted, corporate, travel agent or tour operator fare types are NOT applicable.
