Hi. I am due to travel to NYC will a work colleage in September. We're both booked on K tickets travelling out on a Sat and back Fri.

My colleage now can't travel on the original days due to the need to have an operation. I know a K ticket is restricted, but I think can be changed for £125. Since a revised travel date isn't fixed yet is the best thing to do to change to some distant future date and then change again when dates are known. or if the ticket is not used and the flight missed is it still possible to reschedule?

or due to medical reasons will VS consider a refund?

Now I am travelling alone I am very tempted by a £220 upgrade from K to UC !! Sadly only available on the outward trip.

My understanding is that if someone is unable to travel because of illness then he/she should contact his/her insurance company

if you change and change again then I think you will have to pay two sets of change fees PLUS any difference in the fair your friend paid and the fair for the rebooked flights.

I think that VS would only refund the taxes and airport fees (less admin) and it would be down to your friend to reclaim the rest from their insurance company. One of the FAQs specifically says this re unrefundable fares. Even then the insurance company would expect you to claim the fees and taxes seperatly from VS

This is one complicated area and its probbaly best phoning VS.

As you your potential to upgrade - every cloud ...

Never mind about your colleague's ticket changes -- buy the upgrade for you! :D Unless your K ticket was very very expensive, £220 is, in my opinion, a great price for a one-way upgrade.

220 to jump from K (lowest PE fare) to UC is a bargain. You should grab it because if you stop and think it will be gone.

K is not refundable but is changable but each time you change you have to pay the change fee.

I wanted to delay a trip recently but was not sure what the dates I wanted were. After talking to the VS agent I concluded that it was better to no-show for the flight and I advised the agent that I would be no-showing (she was not at all sure how to respond).
The when I came to re-book I had the change fee (about GBP90) plus the no-show fee of about 120 but what this did was give me total flex on the dates I wanted later. (of course subject to availability and any fare change).
It worked out better for me to no-show than set a date. It resulted in an empty un-used seat on the original flight which they could have sold but it is their system so that is their problem.
