VS are allowing passengers booked on certain flights over the next 3 days to change/postpone their flights.

Although everything is currently planned to operate at normal, it does look like they may be preparing to cancel some flights.

They are saying on BBC News that Irene will continue up the coast and as she is still at sea will still be a hurricane when she reaches NYC which is unusual as 'normal' hurricanes move inland and become a 'tropical storm' and then loose most of their force before getting that far north.

Not a good week to be in the NYC/DC area what with 'quakemageddon' too !

Arrived on Tuesday just before the quake, departing today just before Irene.

You'd think it was armageddon here ... seriously, folk in the US do love a drama, and it'll probably all be a damp squib!

Here's the advice from my head office (well the fun bits):

- Have manual can openers
- If power goes out, do NOT use generators or barbecue grills INDOORS or next to buildings.

And if our American cousins could make a decent one they should also

I saw that on the New York Times Web site, but not on the JFK alerts page yet, although it does seem that airlines have started to cancel (TAM for example) while others are encouraging people to delay.

Now I see that all JFK and EWR flights tomorrow are cancelled.

The VS11 to Boston and VS21 to Washington are still showing as operating however.

Glad I am coming home tonight on the much delayed VS2 leaving at 2 am!

Also, BA have cancelled all their flights to the New York area tomorrow ... and it looks like at least one V-Flyer will be delayed.

Am not surprised the have closed JFK as it is in the zone at risk of flooding in a Category 2+ hurricane.

I flew out to Boston on VS11 yesterday (TR to come) and all was then fine in the Virgin world. I was supposed to be heading out to Martha's Vineyard today/tomorrow but everything transport wise (planes and ferries) is shutting down in advance of Irene's arrival.

So I'm staying in Lexington (Boston) and expecting 50-80 mph winds and 2-3 inches of rain. To cap it all we are going to an outdoor concert tonight!

Interesting times :)

From the Washington Post

The portable silver beer cooler is clean and in the living room for easy access,” she said. “I’ve consulted with neighbors to ensure that between us we have enough alcohol.

I was in the local liquor store yesterday and the assistant at the checkout said business was very brisk. Twice as busy as normal!

Get the booze in and batten down the hatches :)
