Question, why do VS check in agents (more in the US than the UK) ask you to put on the VS luggage tags?

They often impress upon me the need to attach tags, I never do, it's never been an issue (apart from in India). So I wonder why?

It seams (to me anyway) that the Americans have an almost genetic need to label and tag things.

Go to a museum and as well as a ticket you get a little metal button that appears to carry great weight.

Go as part of a group and there are labels of all colours indicating your level in that group - ordinary member to group leader.

I see conference delegates with name badges what say 'my name is ...' and grown adults will happily wear these for hours if not days

Holiday groups have lanyards and little plastic pouches (and a name label as well) and woe betide anyone who removes it ! (what are they going to do - send 'Bud' or 'Phyllis' to Guantanamo?)

But as for the VS labels - maybe a sign that they have been looked at for size approval either for the gate or the TSA?

Though like you I have seen plenty of pax without tags
