Hi folks,

Yes it's another question about TPs and renewals! Fun eh?

I got to Silver in May and my points were reset to zero then, I think I lost a couple but never mind.

My flight home from SFO next week should take me back over 15 points again, which is what I assume I need to renew (not that I've been given clear info on this by VS but leaving that aside ...).

What happens to any points I earn between now and the end of my membership year (which I assume is May but this seems to be a secret)? Do they reset to zero again?

I think the odds are I won't make Gold by May but I might well get another 10 or 12 points. If these are going to be lost maybe I should delay my trips until after May and put the points towards the next renewal?

Being handed a 6 month incentive not to fly seems to me to be illogical for a frequent flyer scheme so I assume I've misunderstood something. Can someone help me out with what it is?

Thanks,

Martin

Any TP's you earn after your 15 required to renew Ag will just keep going until you hit Au. If you don't get enough for gold then at your renewal date you will just lose them and start again. Don't forget to achieve the next level it is a rolling year, so it gives you maximum chance to hit or retain your level. Yes, it slightly works against you because you have earnt your 15 TP's early, but for others who only qualify late in the renewal year, they have free months when they aren't losing status.

I'm not sure what else you expect them to do in all honesty.

Ok, thanks very much for the info. So it does work like that. How odd.

I wasn't really complaining, just trying to get my head around how renewal works as I haven't done it before.

No idea what I'd expect them to do instead of this. But this does seem to create a strange reverse incentive to me, one unschooled in the field of Airline Logic.

One other point is that the rolling year is 13 months, despite the mention of the "12-13 months" on the website. That only applies in the year you first make Ag. I really struggled to work this one out when trying to find when my year ended. I'm now clear that if you got to Ag by May 31st, your next year will be 1st June 2011 to 30th June 2012. As Neil notes, that may help if you are nearly at Gold.

Earlier in the year I wrote to the Flying Club asking about my renewal date and they replied:

"Having checked your Flying Club account, it's indicated that your Gold membership renewal period started from 1st June 2010 and is up to 30th June 2011. I notice that you have already qualified for your next Gold renewal. However if you earn any extra tier points before 30th June 2011, they will just drop off and will not be carried forward towards your next renewal period."

HTH
