Now I'm sure been through this before: Does the tax/fees/sleath surcharges apply at adult rates for a child? With the only discount being applied to the illusive base fare.... Therefore any reward booking will get full adult fees etc?

Having a mind fart this morning?

Hmmm.
1 Adult and 1 Child to LAX gives you this:

Operating Airline Fuel & Insurance Surcharge YQ GBP 478.00
USA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Fee XA GBP 6.40
USA Immigration Service Fee XY GBP 8.80

UK Air Passenger Duty GB GBP 130.00
UK Passenger Service Charge UB GBP 68.98
September 11th Security Fee AY GBP 3.20
Total GBP 702.38

1 Adult is:

All Passengers
Taxes, fees, charges & surcharges description Code Amount
Operating Airline Fuel & Insurance Surcharge YQ GBP 239.00
USA Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service Fee XA GBP 3.20
USA Immigration Service Fee XY GBP 4.40
USA Customs User Fee YC GBP 3.50
UK Air Passenger Duty GB GBP 65.00
UK Passenger Service Charge UB GBP 34.49
September 11th Security Fee AY GBP 1.60

So yup - looks like they all apply... :(

Now, that's for a 2-11 child. Not sure about an infant.

I note BA stipulate they impose the above to "reflect the fluctuating price of worldwide oil" and it is based on flight duration.
Do VS provide any justification for their surcharge, other than just following what BA do and generally being allowed to get away with it..

If this surcharge reflects the fluctuating price of fuel.... How come it's fixed upto 11mths in advance... Don't know of anyone who's had to pay more or offered a refund?

An old topic, but an angry man who has just found out he'll have to pay £600 for a child's UC reward seat to SA! Government taxes aren't a big issue compared to this scam!

Have come across this thread after looking into booking some reward flights for the wife and I. I would love someone from VS to justify the huge surcharge imposed on pax for most of their flights - I see it as purely profiteering v(

Looked at various destinations with the surcharge ranging from £290-£450 making the flight not-so-free :?

Well to be fair to VS they have never advertised them as 'free' flighs.

And most of the charge is the VS fuel surcharge which they could do something about - would people be willing to pay more in miles to avoid paying the YQ.

The taxes and airport fees would still need to be paid for. Not sure they would accept FC miles in lieu !
