Hi all

Discovered this forum by accident, but glad I did so.

My wife and I fly to Cancun on Tuesday, 10 July in PE.
We have previously flown from LGW with VA on a few occassions and now we have enough miles to upgrade to Upper Class.
I called VA some time ago, however, we were advised to request an upgrade using miles upon check in, which of course we will do.

My question concerns which plane we will be on, particularly as the config given in the seat plan is the 747-400 and not the LGW fleet. Would I be correct in assuming that VA must have one of the LHR fleet covering the absence of others undergoing refit.

Has anybody else had this experience? It would be great if we are on one of the more modern fleet!

Yes, there will be a LHR 747 doing CUN on 10 July and that's because there's also one doing CUN On 7 July and it's needed (UC and PE seat volume) to bring the party back who are going out on the 7th!

So, you should be lucky and get an upgrade on the outbound assuming VS will cater for more UC passengers. I'd keep calling before the day too.

I know what you mean by 'more modern' but note that the LGW planes are newer generally than the LHR planes, and with the current refurbs will then become more modern still!

Thanks for the input Slinky, really appreciated.

Hopefully then, if we can upgrade to UC, it will give the start of our vacation a real boost!

Not wishing to put a dampner on your plan but not all PE tickets are technically upgradeable (ie K class and the classs issued by Virgin Holidays which is H). Sometimes you'll luck out if it's not "technically" possible, this often being dependent on the loads in other cabins.
The alternative is that you may be asked to move up (ie by paying cash) to an upgradeable fare if there are G seats available to upgrade with miles.
The LHR aircraft is scheduled to bring the party animals (like slinky :D ): ) home on the 10th but just because there'll be a bigger UC cabin with more seats it doesn't mean that VS will want to fill them.
Good luck though - it never hurts to ask nicely :) .

Indeed Mrs Lady of the Dragon.

Just because there is room does not mean that VS will offer upgrades (and BA is the same according to many flyer talk threads)

But again it does not hurt to ask.

Thanks all.

Just to point out that we have PE, class S on the way out, but class K on the return flight, therefore, I assume we have more chance of an upgrade to UC on the way out.

Anyway, whatever happens, the collective knowledge on this particular website is superb. Thanks to all!

If you have a S class fare on the way out and it's been booked direct with VS as a "proper" S not a discounted fare with VH/ or a travel agent / corporate fare (which does sometimes happen) you can upgrade now if there is G availablity :) .Even if there's not keep checking.
