I'm flying from Heathrow to Newark with Virgin in a few weeks. I've not flown this route before and I'll be on VS17 which is due into Newark at 11:20pm. Does anyone know what the queues are like for immigration usually? I will be in economy and have got an exit row seat so don't know how far back in the plane that will place me. I don't know if VS17 is a popular flight either so don't know how busy it will likely be. If anyone can advise on any of this i'd be very grateful to read your opinions. Also, does anyone know if taxis are readily available after midnight at Newark? I'm guessing it could take an hour or even more to get through the airport.

It's normally pretty quiet in the immigration hall for this flight, the only thing to bear in mind is there is quite limited staffing manning the desks at that time, so queues can build quite quickly.

Suggest a sharpish exit and a brisk walk!

Taxis should be OK but you could always pre book a car.

I recommend Carmel Limos butothers use Dial 7

I usually take 17 - but in June, there were only 2 officials serving the immigration line. I was PE and it took about 40 mins.

The airport itself is dead - nothing open and limited staff... but, baggage is returned quickly.

Cabs a plenty, but I'd suggest you book a car in advance as taxi fares vary a fair bit.

Taxis from EWR will still be cheaper than a limo, although the latter might be more comfortable. Immigration is sometimes quick, sometimes slow - like most US airports but the VS017 is a popular flight and is often full. I've taken it often and usually only have a 15-20 minute wait from exiting the plane to a car, but then I am usually in the front.

I took the VS17 a few years ago. Granted, I was in UC, but was through immigration and baggage claim within about 20 minutes. The airport was dead though, I'd pre-booked Super Shuttle to take me into Manhattan, and had to phone them to get them to dispatch a van! As previous posters have said, there's virtually no staff at that time.

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to reply. I've booked a car service and I just hope that the emergency exit row is at the front of economy.

At least I get my first upper class experience on the flight home.

Glad you got something sorted !

Just for your trip back that whilst the EWR lounge is a nice place to spend an hour or two is it not a 'destination' CH like LHR and JFK. So you may want to time your trip back bearing that in mind.

Just saw the post - I was there in EWR a few weeks ago via the VS17 - was astonishingly empty because the main feeder flight (VS301) was cancelled, so shared PE with 3 other pax.

there were 4 immigration officers manning the desks and though we were 20 mins early landing, and I was in the PE cabin (and did the usual dash), it did take about 20 mins to get through - there was another delayed flight that arrived about 20 mins before ours. The upside was that I got to the belt as soon as it started and had bag in hand about 3 mins after that.

There were a good amount of taxis available just in case you need it even though you have your car booked. I just hope that someone from the car service will meet you at arrivals - as it was all a bit alien to me (it was my first time there and I ended up doing a few circles; I'm usually a JFK guy).

Have fun!

Just to ask a similar question.

I am on VS1 next month and am wondering what the queues are like arriving at 19.10? We're having an early start as we're coming from Nottingham on the train to London and have to be up at 6.30 so it's going to be a long, long day and I really don't want to stand for 2 hours and would like to get to the hotel as soon as possible.

We're in economy and I will be selecting seats as far forward as possible to help us get off quickly.

There is website that lists average CBP waiting times if you want to google that.

Also have a look to see what other international flights arrive around the same time as the VS1 on the EWR website - that will also give you an idea about who (and where from) other pax may be from. A flight from an 'exotic' destination landing close could mean longer delays.

And of course once yo get off the plane head to the immegration hall at a brisk walking pace.
