Companion ticket - help

Hello v-flyers! So, when I renewed my Au card recently I was naturally awarded a companion ticket, however, I have absolutely no idea how to use one?!

If I were to book one, would I get miles/tier points for my ticket?

Far from an expert on these matters but sure I have read here that you will get miles and tier points on the purchased ticket but not the companion ticket.
I would also add a word of warning, unless there is a sale on, when I tried to use one of mine a few years ago it was almost as cheap to purchase a couple of low tariff UC fares than a flexible fare I could use the reward with. I think I eventually just redeemed miles for the two tickets and paid the dreaded tax and surcharges as it was less cost.
Things may have changed. There are some clever people on here that know these rules inside out.

As LovingGold thought, to use a companion ticket you need to buy a flexible fare (J, W,S,Y,B,R,L) and then pay the taxes/surcharges also for the companion ticket. You earn miles and TP's on the revenue fare not the companion fare.

In most cases it is cheaper to buy two lowest fare tickets, especially in UC.

Only use I thought t had was if employer had bought a full flex UC fare,allowing PAX to take spouse on trip with them?

Hmmm usually companies are the main market for the flexible fares - obv because they need the leeway these tickets provide.

I find the best use of these is with s fare premium economy tickets. With the flexible fare plus taxes (and surcharges) it usually works out cheaper than 2 x Ks.

However would just say if you are looking for two tickets at late notice it is better to use the buy one get one free (tax and surcharge aside ): ) than pay for the two full fare tickets ii) this is probably going to be their main purpose.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Saves me and the girlfriend about $1,000 (on 2x PE tix) if we use the companion ticket for our trip to Europe for Christmas, not a bad deal really.
