Ahh, ok I get where you are going with this now Scooby.
Miles do cost more to spend than they do to earn. If not then the airlines would go bust given the amount of mileage in circulation. Think of it as an exchange rate for currency - It does fluctuate at times and there are def more favourable 'exchanges' out there than others.
As for the secrets of getting the best deals out there - was there not supposed to be a members only board for this kind of conversation?? Come on Pete, where is the Clubhouse
Would not say, sticky this topic, as everyone is going to be finding diff ways to "cash in" so to speak depending on their situation, and relying on a list here, that may miss something depending on all the factors that could be in play, could mean they get a worse deal than they could have. If you are happy with the deal - take it y) and don't look back.
In the meantime, best earners that I have come across so far are def the VS Black Amex, however in fairness non-VS amex can have some pretty good conversion deals from amex points to VS FC miles.
Also of note is the shopsaway tool - it is amazing how much can be scrounged from day to day stuff if you have a gander down the list of participating retailers.
Hire cars and hotels are pretty much required if you are travelling anyway so the best earners on those will be on flights (and trains

)
In terms of flights I tend to go for the 'L' eco fare if I am going to take a pop at upgrading with miles.... it is usually cheaper than going full fare premium economy or upper, and the surcharges and tax difference, whilst indeed daylight robbery, are here to stay. Sorry I am not going to throw numbers your way as again given the variables, I am fairly certain I could write enough to qualify for a research paper on the subject ii)
Need to consider distance travelled into your thoughts as well.... I have seen sale fares for west coast US coming pretty close to fares for east coast US travel too - what would be the mileage value in this situation? The miles travelled is obviously greater, giving a different earn value and poss even spend value if upgrading into a premium cabin.... getting tricky now isn't it ?| ?| ?| Your calculations would have to be done on a route by route basis... anyone got a few hours to spare?
And I am done for a Saturday..... now off to the pub
