NYC fuel shortages

Hi all,

Hope everyone who has been in NYC the last week is faring well with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. My apt retained power, so I have been housing friends from downtown who remain without power, so they can sleep, shower, and recharge phones etc. Manhattan is a surreal place to be right now, that is for sure.

I understand that owing to the fuel shortages, car companies are not taking new bookings, and existing ones (mine included) are no longer guaranteed (I had a call earlier to advise me of this). Taxis will likely be harder to get also as a result.

I remain hopefull that my car service will come through for me, so please message me if anyone else needs to get to JFK airport tomorrow, cannot book a car, and wants to car pool with me. I am on VS46, but have brought my car reservation forward to 2:30pm, just in case. I will be leaving from Midtown West.

Alternatively, if all else fails, it looks like the F and M trains are running local from Manhattan to JFK, but I'd guess that would be a 1.5 hour journey, so plan accordingly incase urrent bookings fail or taxis can't be found. I am sure there are also bus services, but I haven't looked at those.

(P.S. I know there is anther thread on Hurricane Sandy, but wanted to start a new one specific for car pooling to the airport).

Just for information the LIRR is also running a free service to Jamaica from Penn. Took about 25 minutes this afternoon. However the AirTrain only runs from Jamaica to Federal Circle where you transfer to shuttle buses. It took at least another 40 minutes to get to T4 from there (Federal Circle). 90 minutes from Penn to check in in total - very very busy indeed and not pleasant. But totally free

Thanks for the tip! Luckily my car turned up, and there's no traffic, which coupled with the flight delay means 6 hours at the clubhouse... Hopefully not too much of a hardship

I have a car from JFK to Connecticut tomorrow ... hope it does turn up !
