I'm thinking of using my companion ticket (via credit card) to take my wife to Cape Town in PE next year.

Just wondering if there are ever sale prices on W or S seats, or are the sales only on the cheapest fares in each class?

Sales tend to be only for the cheaper buckets so H and K in PE.

The logic probably goes - we know people wanting W/S will more than likely want to upgrade or need flexible tickets and are prepared to pay for the privilege.

Thought as much.

Supplementary question - I don't actually have the Companion ticket yet, but should qualify through the black Amex this month. Does it credit relatively quickly, or will I have to wait until a year after I got the card?

T&C's aren't particularly clear.

MBNA will notify Virgin within 30 days of your hitting the require spend and it will be added to your account within one week.

PE sales fares always book in to the K class.

Do work out if 2x discounted K fares works out much cheaper than a S/W with a companion fare. Don't forget you have to pay the taxes/fees on the companion ticket and it won't earn any miles or TP's.

The other option to consider is an M economy fare upgraded with miles (25k round trip per person), this could work out cheaper for not that many more miles.

Ouch, more marketing wins...the companion fare isn't the bargain it first appears.. Not quite the bogof offer. Always price up individually before committing to a high fare seat and a companion plus extra costs. Companion fates only really worth the hype if buying a flexi fare- I.e business bought..

Works out quite good for the Cape Town route (and non-sale fares).

1 adult, 1 infant, and 1 Companion for around £2.5k in PE, compared with around £3.5k paying for everyone in the cheapest PE, or £2k paying for all in Economy.

Just to address your original question - the fully flexible fares (Y/W/J) don't go on sale, as such, but their price does fluctuate. I believe the same is true of the more restricted fares -- I've seen Ls in economy reduced for a time, for instance, and I recall a thread on here some time ago which talked about S fares moving around. To be honest, though, I expect this is really just the impact of market forces, rather than 'sales'.

Agreed with at240 - the sales fares are the lowest of the fare buckets (In PE this would be K fares primarily). As such the higher fares (S/W in this instance) will not go on sale per se, but the price will bounce around depending on the mysteries of the revenue management department.
