I went to the O2 last weekend and saw several planes flying overhead reminding me that London City Airport still exists. But who actually uses it? Its of no use for feeder/connecting flights so how is it still surviving? Its so small, with smaller aircraft and few destinations. ?|
I try and use it whenever I can, despite being nearer to LHR. Nowhere else can you go from landing to train home in just under 10 minutes!
I have never used it myself but imagine it could be useful if you work or live relatively close by. Cheaper and probably quicker to get a tube than take express trains to other airport (ok yes you can get tube to LHR) but...
Anyway also quicker boarding times so guessing for busy business people it could be good

LCY serves a surprisingly large number of destinations. BA has a significant operation there -- (http://www.londoncityairport.com/travelandbooking/airlines) -- including its 'flagship' all-business-class JFK BA001 service.
Who uses it? All kinds of people. Depending on where you are based, LCY can be a very useful and convenient alternative to LHR or LGW.
Of course, its major source of premium passengers is the Docklands, with its heavy concentration of banking and financial services.

I've used LCY several times over the last 10 years or so and it is useful for feeder / connecting flights just not in the same was as say LHR is with it's hub and spoke model.
For example I've flown from LCY to FRA to connect to a LH YVR flight and to ZRH to connect to LX flights to BOS.
It survives because it knows it's market in terms of it's passengers (mainly business but some leisure) and routes (popular business routes and not leisure routes)

although by road its a bit hit and miss (I have to use either the Dartford or Blackwall tunnel) its still easier/closer/quicker than LHR (but not LGW)
the best bit is you can leave check in till T-15 - AND its doable
if you live nearby or on a decent train connection I can see the advantage
the other plus for me was you disembark JFK as a domestic pax so can make a quick connection. I can be at RSW and home earlier than if I fly direct to TPA or MCO

There's a massive catchment area and it's convenient for the City and Canary Wharf.
I have flown from Dublin and Dundee to London City, also from London City to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Copenhagen.
Usually due to the price but I do love flying on board Embraers.

I use it for most my European flights.
Live in the South East, very close to HS-1. 15 mins to Stratford and 15 mins on the DLR to the airport. In real time it's quicker all round to fly.
Late check-in, bags are out in 5 mins normally.

I was aware of the JFK flight and I suppose the small aircraft and premium passengers make it viable. Maybe a bit more attractive to the highflying banker or local eastender than other further out in the SE.
Would suggest you give it a try next time you are flying short haul. As others have mentioned you can pass through city much quicker than Gatwick or Heathrow although security is now slower (more thorough) than once it was.
I use it for work trips mainly. Comparing a flight to Edinburgh say, using (the very nice) Little Red, it is significantly quicker. Working in central london, City is nearer, easier to get to than LHR (), once you are on the plane at Heathrow you can easily spend 20-30mins driving around the airport in a big bus with wings before getting off the ground. Mind you when you need a couple of tier points, there are sacrifices you can make

Preferred option is EasyJet to Gatwick, if short notice and their prices are thru the roof then BA to LCY are cheaper. Off the plane and on the DLR in 10 minutes, easy connections onto the mainline railways. BA to LGW on their 23 year old 737s :0 is way down the list.

People rave about LCY and, if you live or work in east London, it's undeniably convenient compared to the others.
But having used it on a Friday evening when it was absolutely heaving with loud City types and there was no room to breathe in departures let alone sit down, the attraction was somewhat lost on me.

Now that I'm in South East London, I use LCY whenever it's an option. Not only quicker to get to for me, but significantly quicker to get through.
And there's a fair number of destinations.
A great little airport - as long as you don't expect anything special (they way it's touted as a business airport you might be expecting it to be a massive Executive Lounge. Or was that just me?)

Doesn't Philip green use it to commute from Monaco 4 days per week

I love this airport and as mentioned previously, more and more routes are being added. Super convenient for anyone living to the east of London. The security area recently underwent a huge upgrade which make a big difference to the overall experience. Only negative aspect is passport control if you're landing between 5pm and 8pm - queues can be hideous.
