Cabin Baggage

How strict are VS on cabin baggage in UC?

I'm planning on using my Jansport Driver 8 as my cabin baggage but it's ever so slightly out in one of the dimensions given and the last thing I want is my laptop etc traveling as hold luggage!

Although this was in PE, when we flew to NY (hand luggage only) a while back we dropped by the check in desks in T3 to get a paper boarding pass after doing OLCI. The lady behind the desks asked us to put our hand luggage on the scales and informed us that as it was over 10kg it would have to be checked in, and refused to issue a BP unless we agreed to do so.

Once at the gate we predictably saw loads of people with roll aboard bags which were obviously over 10kg in weight. They just hadn't been to a check in desk as they'd printed BP's at home.

VS' hand luggage entitlement is worse that easyJet, and isn't even enforced properly.

I've never been questioned or challenged over my hand baggage (and I always go via check in desk to collect a "proper boarding card") ,despite having questionably large hand luggage on a few trips, so I guess it's pot luck!?!

I quite often travel with my cabin case 5cm too wide.
I am always careful to pack only essentials in it so it weighs less than the limit.
I have had my case weighed a couple of times but the size has never been questioned.

Coming back from Mexico they were measuring and weighing all cabin baggage at the gate, including duty free. we were fine with being in UC although still weighed in, but I imagine there will have been a few surprised people in economy/PE

I had my cabin baggage weighed when travelling in PE when returning from the US - it was 2kg over and after some discussions they did let me take it.

Consistently inconsistent seems to be the message here.

I wonder if it is one of those situations that depends on the route
busy routes may see this rule more likely enforced than others:?
Size of the case is one thing - obviously it needs to be able to get in the overhead bins but weight is different and probably more important?

As I understand it, with UC you can take 2 pieces of hand luggage so your latop could be in a separate bag or be able to split out your planned luggage into 2 parts if there is an overly efficient dude at the check in desk.

Sounds like it's worth the chance of taking my intended bag.

If you are travelling on hand luggage only, the best bet is to do OLCI and print your BP at home. Then head direct to the lounge. Avoiding the check-in desks works for me every time and by the time you get to the gate, they just want to get you onboard.

I'm traveling with hold luggage too (would be rude not to in UC when they give you all that allowance!) so I just need to visit the bag drop in Edinburgh. Means I don't need to overstuff the hand luggage though so I don't see any issues

(Just in case though I'll have my small backpack in my checked luggage which can also take my laptop if needs be!)
