Hi all
Looking at some virgin America flights and just want to clarify a couple of things so where better to come !
On the website there is main cabin select and instant upgrade to main cabin select with main cabin select being more than twice the price , am I right in assuming that if you book the instant upgrade to main cabin select you are taking a gamble as to whether there are seats available or are you guaranteed the upgrade if you pay the extra 100 dollars ?
Secondly am I right in thinking that you will earn miles and TP ,s

If you buy the main cabin select upgrade, you are guaranteed the main cabin select seat and services etc, it's just that the upgrade fare comes with a $100 change/cancel fee unlike a full main cabin select fare which has no change/cancel fee.

Both those main cabin select fares earn 100% VS FC miles and 1 VS TP each way regardless of distance flown.

One great feature (IMHO) of VX is the ability to upgrade online for a pretty reasonable set price if there's still availability at T-24 for Main Cabin Select and T-6 for First Class.

I think it ranges from about $40 for a short hop in MCS to $300 for Economy-First on the transcontinental routes. It's a gamble as availability may have gone but worth thinking about if the upgrade prices you're quoted when booking seem very high.

I recently did a VX transcon from SFO>JFK. Was very reasonable for the upgrade considering the length of flight and it was pretty empty in First. Managed to sleep for 2.5 hours as well in the angle flat seat!

If you choose MCS instant upgrade, you get MCS but at a restricted fare code. Think of it just like J and Z Fare codes. Even with the upgrade at the airport, the fare was significantly less than the asking price for First. It was just me travelling but I can imagine it might be difficult with 2+ people.
