Hi Guys,

Got another nice combi fare booked last night into MCO and out of JFK which lets me connect nicely with a delta flight out of MCO and into JFK.

The VS flight is the VS10 leaving JFK at 21.30 so the question is, do I get the DL1958 landing at 2.20pm and spend a few hours in the Big Apple or catch a later one and stay in the airport.

How easy is it to "nip" downtown

many thanks

David

In short not very....

Driving - you will have a lot of traffic to deal with there and back at that time of day, thanks to never ending 'improvement works' on all of the approach roads, giving you probably all of 20 minutes in the Big Apple (if that) before you should head back to the airport.

Train - Usually very busy.. Commuters, tourists struggling with suitcases and the need to change trains several times will also reduce your amount of time in the city.... you may get a half hour before it would be wise to head on back to JFK in order to enjoy the CH to the max.

That all being said, I was practically flown the distance a few years ago from JFK to manhattan island by a taxi driver that had little regard for the speed limit or other road users. Clocked in at about 25 minutes from airport curb to hotel revolving door!!!!!! I was a tad shaken at the other end.... kind of like how you feel after getting off a fairground ride (and no I don't mean the teacups :P)... my fault for telling him I was a little pressed for time I guess.

They are very good at JFK check-in and have always offered me an earlier flight if I am running ahead of schedule. One of the reasons my transatlantic business is still with VS.... BA staff tend to look at you as though you have just killed 10 people when you ask to transfer to an earlier flight. :w

Def stay at the airport , as great as NYC is there isn't really time to do much I wouldn't have thought and there is def much better things to do with $120 odd dollars of cab fares .
The clubhouse should be open by the time you are there presuming you have access so sit back and pig out on good food and wine would be my choice and you never know you might just be able to wangle an earlier flight

Thanks guys, thought as much.

There is a later flight up leaving Orlando at 4.20 getting in around 7.00 so might grab that one as it gives a few more hours in the sunshine before heading home.

It's also a great excuse to grab a cheap upper fare in the next sale and have a long weekend across there some other time

Thanks again

David.

As a New Yorker, do yourself a favor, and stay out of 'the city' (i.e. Times Square). You will regret it on every level, especially if you're short on time.

Nothing is more stressful than a backed-up Cross Bronx Expressway to the airport :-)

I'm on the same flight (VS10) back to LHR next month. Only difference is that I get into JFK at 07:00 after an overnight from LAX. 14 hours in the clubhouse might diminish my chances of being allowed on board for the flight (hic!).

It would be a shame not to visit the city but the thought of that journey has me undecided.

I would certainly visit the city in your situation - it would be crazy to stay there all day (does the CH even stay open throughout?) -- ultimately it's a nice waiting room but 3 hours is more than enough.

To the OP - I'd get the later flight up to JFK. The earlier one would give you an hour or two downtown and that's not really enough in my view.

Def worth a day out on this occasion ,too much time to spend at the airport and as pointed out I believe the CH shuts and re opens around about 2/ 2.30 ish I think .
I guess the only prob is if you have your luggage in tow , is there anywhere in JFK to store it ?

I think I remember walking past a luggage storage place between exiting customs and the air train.

Well that changes things. I should've checked that. Definitely luggage drop and a trip to the city.
