Hi everyone,

I've currently got a return trip booked from LHR to JFK on "O" class tickets each way. I wondered if anyone had anecdotal evidence of the cost of changing these to "M"s in both/either direction and then perhaps upgrading to Premium or Upper?

I've got plenty of miles, and realise that (to do it in advance) there would need to be reward seats available in Premium or Upper, but I'm just wondering what costs might be involved. I've obviously booked and am happy to travel in Economy as its a relatively short flight, but should I get the desire to upgrade, even if it's at the airport I want to make sure I'm getting the best deal! Is an airport cash upgrade as it usually advertised cheaper than a mileage plus taxes/fuel charge upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any/all of your replies.

Hi I think the simplest and quickest way to answer your question would be to phone FC and see what the fare difference is and if there's reward availability. I suspect you might be looking at couple hundred quid extra plus additional taxes and surcharges, but the phone call will get you the answer quicker.

Cash upgrade at the airport apparently is very often not good value. Miles upgrade at the airport still requires paying the fare difference to an upgradeable fare but the miles required is the same as advance upgrading.

I've done this many times and can say it can be as cheap as $20 and as much as $500+. It all depends on the current cost of the M fare vs what you paid. And as we all know, fares change all the time. I echo what was said about just phoning up FC.

Not sure if this helps, but I've often changed H to S and then upgraded S to G. FC will do this in one transaction. So even if I'm in a non-upgradable class, always worth checking to see if a reward seat becomes free and then asking for total cost (as said already)

Highest cost fpr me has been £220 ish total for H to S and then G.
Lowest for same, £44 - no idea why so cheap
