My points balance is more or less zero after booking some reward flights for myself, wife and infant.

The next time we fly after this reward flight, the baby will be >2 therefore needs their own seat.

I've read a lot on here about VA only making 2 reward seats available - if this is the case, is there much point in me continuing to collect miles, if we won't be able to get 3 reward seats in one go?

Decisions decisions!!

We are three, sometimes four when we take his pal. He's now 16.

I find it more beneficial than ever to collect miles at the fastest rate possible. I should never have introduced him to PE let alone UC. I've not had difficulty with rewards. Of course school holidays will be limited, as will certain popular routes including those with 14 UC seats. But it can be done.

I don't recall reading that? I know some some other airlines (BA?) have policies of this sort, but I didn't think VS did.

That's right. When BA enhanced (cough) the Avios rewards programme in April 2015 they stated the would offer 2 Club and 4 World Traveller reward seats on every flight:

We guarantee that more than 9 million reward seats will be available on our flights this year, with a minimum of two Club World/Club Europe and four World Traveller/Euro Traveller reward seats on all British Airways operated flights that are offered for sale on ba.com (excluding subsidiaries and franchises).

But I have never seen any similar statement from Virgin Atlantic.

I would still keep collecting miles. Even if you have to buy one seat it can still be cheaper overall. Lots of people do this.

Remember though to allocate the paid for seat to one of the adults - preferably the main miles earner.
