I've been half-planning my trip to California next spring for over a year, knowing it was going to hinge on finding miles seats to/from LAX/SFO/LAS, which I appreciate are all routes that don't always have a lot of availability. Plus my husband and I can only take a maximum of two weeks holiday, so we couldn't be as flexible as I'd like on dates.

Having spent the evening on the VS website and on the phone to the lovely, helpful folks on the FC helpline, it looks like I've done it (fingers crossed that all the ticketing goes through OK)! My husband and I are both flying from London into LAX and home from SFO in upper on Gs and my in-laws are flying from Manchester to LAS and back the day before/after us using my VS AMEX PE vouchers (so I needed both economy and PE to be available). Woohoo!

Quick question, looks like our LAX/SFO flights are on the 787-9, haven't flown that before, looks similar to the old Airbus A340 set up with three columns of seats, so I'm guessing that 5/6A is a good spot given that I'd go for the same in K on the old configuration?

Well done!

The main difference on the 789 is all the A seats face the wall and all the G & K seats face each other, whereas on the 346 the configuration changes half way down the cabin.

For future reference if you use the Amex upgrade voucher at the same time as you book, there only needs to be reward availability in PE, not Economy.

Ah, that's really helpful to know thank you! That bit ended up being really complicated as we booked the in-laws flights using my husband's miles (as I'd just used mine up on our flights), then because the flights were booked in the in-laws names, they had to ring FC to authorise me to use the vouchers from my account! Thought we were going to end up having to do a 4 way conference call at one point...

Well done on persevering!

Having just returned from LAX with both flights being on the Dreamliners, we had 3/4 A on the outbound and 5/6 A on the return & I would recommend these seats - as well as facing the back of the G seats you also get two overhead bins from 4A onwards ;-)

The one to avoid is 7A as there is no window :-(
