Hi everyone,

I'm gold and my partner is silver. Can we pool our miles together? If so, how? Do we both need to phone up?

If this is a gold-only benefit, which I think it is, what happens if I drop down to silver? Do we, as of that date, revert back to our separate accounts?

Grateful for any insight!

Thanks!

Is your partner your supplementary silver card holder (SSA)? If so, you can spend their miles at any time when booking a reward flight.

In order to pool your miles into one account the nearest VS offer for doing this and as a gold card benefit, is you need to set up a ‘family account’ and link the silver card account to yours (being supplementary silver doesn’t automatically do this), that way any miles any or the family members earn including your SSA will then automatically go into your Gold Flying Club account. Tier points are not pooled though and always remain separate for each family member.

You need to ring Flying Club to get this set up and all family members must reside at the same address.

It can be a bit hit and miss setting up a family account as the address details have to match perfectly (i.e. 100% match down to the correct spaces in the address fields etc) on each account otherwise they won’t link. It took me a few attempts to set this up as at first it didn’t work as the address fields in the other family members where formatted slightly differently.

You can’t combine existing miles though. It will only start pooling miles earned from future flights once the family account has been set-up.

If you drop down to Silver, the family benefit will stop and the accounts will be separated and just become ordinary accounts.

Thanks so much, mitchja.

No, my partner is not my SSA, they earned the silver status independently.

If we can't pool our existing miles then it's not worth it so I won't bother going through the faff of setting up the family account; I'll be dropping down to Silver in July anyway.

Thanks!

Mitchja is correct, you can't officially combine existing miles into a single account. However as a AU member, I have successfully done it in the past.

I setup my family account about 18 months ago. At the time, my wife was a red member. So I nominated her for my silver card and created a family account with mine and her accounts. The agent seemed happy to add any existing miles in my wifes account into mine at the point of merging. Maybe I got lucky? Maybe it was because my wife only had about 20k miles in her account and they didn't really care about that many? Maybe they have tightened up on rules like this? Who knows, but I'd say it's worth a call to try your luck.
