Have just been looking at one way US - UK reward flights and the cash element seems rather odd, given that the USA don't have our beloved Air Passenger Duty, or high airport passenger charges. For a one way reward ticket, the cash elements are as follows (over and above the FC miles needed)..
Economy - $148.90 / Premium Economy $173.90 / Upper Class $501.90.
That is a hefty amount of cash for Upper Class! Can only assume these charges are largely made up of the YQ element of the fare, i.e. the "Carrier imposed surcharge" that replaced the fuel surcharge (but happens, by co-incidence to be the same amount)? Would not mind too much, but an inbound flight from the USA to the UK is typically shorter due to the jet-stream so will burn less fuel by definition.
