Hey Everyone,

Mrs H and I are booked to fly to SFO in May. I booked an economy fare and used miles to upgrade to premium. Would it be possible to pay for an upgrade to upper one way? Do you reckon this would be a costly exercise if so?

We'll be on VS41 12 May if that makes any difference!

You would be able to upgrade using miles to Upper.

There are airport upgrades available on the day if there’s space in upper you can sometimes get a good deal.

Its wide open in Upper Class right now. I can see May being busy though.

If you have the miles, you could in theory ring VS and ask them to reticket your Economy fare to a Premium cash fare then use miles to upgrade from Premium to Upper?

Although there isn't availability for that at the moment it should be said:

Not so. On BA yes, but VS allows upgrades from Y to J.

What the OP is hoping to do, though, is use cash to upgrade a ticket that’s already been upgraded with miles. That’s not possible in advance but may be doable on the day at the airport if there’s still space in UC.
