Travelling to Las Vegas in PE later this month and looking to bring back a toy my son wants for xmas which is only available in the US. The box is pretty large and heavy as it's a flat pack and made of wood. The dimensions of the box are 47.75” x 23.75” x 6.75” and weighs 58.5 lbs (about 27kg). Do you think Virgin will let me check it in as my second bag?

You might be able to get away with 27kg if the other bag is under 23, but I think that the size might be an issue.

It dosen't work like that. An under weight bag does not allow the under weight to be transferred to an over weight one. The allowance is 2*23 KG not 46KG.

The length of the box will be the issue as it's a foot longer than the allowance so it's likely they will treat it as over sized in which case this applies re over sized baggage and pay the requisite fee of £65 / $100

Which is why I said "might". It has been my experience checking in a bag and a boxed package, that I was allowed to check the suitcase which was about 25.5 kg without having to pay extra. The box weighed about 15kg. The agent understood that I couldn't transfer weight to the package and said ordinarily the limit is 23, but that I wasn't too far off the weight limit, so she'd take both bags.

Thanks all this has been very helpful. Looks like I’d have to pay the oversized baggage fee unless the staff are feeling particularly festive when I check in! Glad to know I can bring this back even if it’s going to cost me a bit in the process.
