I've had the VS Reward+ Card for over a year now and this year's annual fee (£160) has just been loaded onto my account balance.

I can't find the thread that originally mentioned this, but I recall that if you ask to cancel your card part-way through the year, they're supposed to issue a prorated refund of the annual fee.
I just called customers services asking to cancel my card, they said they can't cancel until the £160 balance has been paid. I asked if I pay that off in full and then cancel, will I receive a refund of the annual fee - to which they said no, you won't get anything back.

Has anyone else had experience with cancelling this card?

Amex offers a pro rata refund of the fee for its cards if you cancel but Virgin Money does not.

So you were advised correctly I’m afraid, and it’s also true that the card can’t be cancelled unless the balance is paid in full.

So regrettably you were too late: to avoid paying the fee you needed to have cleared your balance and cancelled the card before your annual renewal date.

In my case (I just cancelled this month) they sent a reminder email about the fee about 6 weeks before my renewal date, clearly explaining the above and giving plenty of notice.

Thanks for clearing that up, I must be getting confused with Amex.

Strange, I never got a reminder email from them - the fee just appeared in my account. Oh well, guess I'll have to use for another year.

we too cancelled our card/s just before the fee was due to go out. We have a good balance of miles for a future trip and felt the fee was too much just to increase our earning rate. I also seem to recall Waitrose announcing they are pulling out of the scheme at some point, whereby using your Virgin card at the till automatically earned miles ? Not sure if this has happened.
Given the chance of us flying any distance in 2020 it looks like we are going to be sitting on our miles balance, with little growth but we are okay with that.
I wonder how many other card holders have cancelled theirs as the annual fee became due? I seem to recall we can always reapply in 6 months.
