buy points then getting a refund

Currently about a week away from hitting the spend on my amex for the bonus points which I will transfer to virgin.
However I am worried availability will go.
i Was thinking of buying the points booking the flights then when I get my amex points transfer to virgin and ask for a refund on the purchased points(within the 14 days)
Is this possible?
has anyone done it?

Hold the availability for 72 hours. Then re-hold is after the 72 hours. Not ideal but might just work.

The buy and then refund option wont work unfortunately because as soon as you redeem any of the purchased points, a refund becomes void. From the T&C on this page:

Members will have the right to cancel any purchases of points for up to 14 days after the date of purchase provided that none of the purchased points have been redeemed. If any of the purchased points have been redeemed, the member will not be entitled to a refund for any of the purchased points including those that have not been redeemed.
