Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to this forum and also with making a booking with VA rewards, so please be gentle if you think some of my questions are glaringly obvious!

I'm looking to organise a trip to America next year for my other half's 40th and obviously I'm hoping to get the best possible deal through a combination of using either reward points, reward voucher, the time of year going etc.

I've currently got 2 reward vouchers available - one that expires 2nd July 2026 and one that expires 29th August 2027. In addition, I've also got 180k reward points.

I've never booked a flight/holiday using either of these things and whilst I get the basic principles of them, I'm somewhat confused over how to get the best possible deal.

I'm hoping to book a 3-4 week trip from either MAN/LHR to New York for a week then over to LAX for the remainder.

My other half's birthday is in May, so it would be great to be away for this, which would also make sure one of the reward vouchers don't expire. It looks like this would be treated as off-peak - provided we were back before 15th June.

Alternatively, I'm wondering if we wait until September as these flights are only just coming out, so there might be more likelihood of getting a better deal? Obviously I don't want to waste the voucher by not going in May/June next year, but am I better waiting for September? Any booking after 2nd September would be off-peak too.

Ideally, I'd like to book premium flights using my reward points and then use the voucher/vouchers to get upgrades to upper, but not sure how easy this is to do, as there never seems to be availability?

Just to add, I'm currently a silver member but this is due to expire at the end of October. I believe this status can double the value of any voucher, but not sure if this means if I book something before the end of the month for next year it would still apply? Is it when you make the booking or your status the time of your departure?

Also, does anyone have any experience of which work out better to use reward points or a voucher? And do Virgin Atlantic sales have any bearing on bookings with reward points?

Finally, how helpful is the helpline for queries like this and would you recommend booking through Virgin Holidays, or doing things separately? I'd only need a hotel for NYC, as in LA I have family there that I can stay with.

Hi Stecoxy - welcome to the the forum :)

You should have quite a few options with 2 vouchers and 180K reward points to make it a special 40th birthday trip.

I believe the vouchers will be worth upto 150K points each while you are still Silver so it's a good idea to lock that in by making your booking this month.

As one option, I'd suggest using your 180K points to book your ticket and then using 1 reward voucher as a Companion Ticket for your other half. You'll also have to pay taxes/fees for each ticket.

From my experience, it's not really worth trying to wait for new availability or sales - the dynamic pricing is exactly that and constantly changing. If you see something that works for you, you'll need to move very quickly before it changes again. When you are ready to book, I'd try to reach someone in the Cardiff call centre, or use the chat function on the website.

For what you'd described, I'd suggest looking at LHR>JFK outbound in UC - you'll find plenty of availability for as little as 29K. That also gives you the full experience with the Clubhouse, Upper Class Wing with drive-through check-in etc... to make it a special start to the holiday.

Then maybe look at LAX>LHR in PE. You should have plenty of options to keep the total below 150K as you are flexible on dates. There may also be options in UC that could work for you, if you check a wide range of dates.

You can use the Reward Seat Checker on the Virgin Atlantic site to check availability. Or it may be worth paying for SeatSpy for a month (I think it's £2.99) to use their heat map and other functionality.

You'll also earn Tier Points on the reward flights - 100 for an UC flight and 50 for PE, so that may help you get back to Silver. I believe if you use Virgin Holidays for your hotel bookings you can also earn TP for the spend too. You can earn TP on Delta for internal flights.

I tried a couple of dummy bookings to show the cost as of today - bearing in mind the dynamic pricing means these are subject to change - but here's one example to give an idea on the cost at the low end.

Saturday, 02 May, LHR>JFK on VS137 in UC for 29K points
Saturday, 23 May, LAX>LHR on VS08 in PE for 40K points
Total to pay 69,000 points for you (and use a voucher as a companion ticket for your other half)
Taxes/Fees of £686.92 per person

Interestingly, I found an UC flight from LAX>LHR on May 10th which was exceptionally low at 68K - the rest of the month are anything from 110K-350K. I doubt it'll be around long - that would give you this option , as of today :

Saturday 18 April, LHR>JFK on VS137 in UC for 29K points
Sunday 10 May, LAX>LHR on VS24 in UC for 68K points
Total to pay 97,000 points for you (and use a voucher as a companion ticket for your other half)
Taxes/Fees of £916.92 per person

Hope this helps and good luck !

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed advice and guidance here. That's given me really helpful food for thought.

Only other question I've got is around the tax/fees.. is it worth exploring trying to get a Virgin or partner airline flight from another airport in Europe? I believe some of them offer lower tax/fees than others? However, I also believe you might struggle with availability or the points aren't as much with a partner airline?

No problem, I hope it all comes together for you both.

I've not spent a lot of time looking into using virgin points on partner airlines - my understanding is availability for business / premium reward seats on partners is very limited (even more so for 2 passengers) and it can be hard to get reliable searches to even see availability. I don't think you can use the Vouchers on partner airlines either.
