We go to Japan every year and fly with a partner airline since the sad demise of the VS NRT route. We've been going from Leeds with KLM and the cheapest business class ticket is a non TP/points earning 'O' fare. However, usually if you're willing to pay the extra for a flexible fare you can get into a fare bucket that does earn VS points. However, the last few times I've looked for flights to NRT/HND all the fares are listed as O regardless of whether I select the cheapest or the most expensive ticket. Weirdly, if you book in economy you earn points even if you book a "light" economy fare. I don't understand this discrepancy and why it's so difficult to earn VS points in business on KLM and Air France flights. If we go from LHR with SAS it's cheaper, books us in as J and we earn full points. I'm just trying to figure it out in case I'm missing something really obvious. Flying from Leeds is our preference as it's much closer for us (20 minutes vs. 4.5 hours to LHR!), but with SAS it's over £800 cheaper for the two of us, plus we earn points if we fly with them.
