Saw the thread on the a.net forum and then found the advert for myself. Apparently this is doing the rounds on the internet and on some tv channels in the US after the watershead! Have a look at it for yourself- it is very cheeky virgin- the virgin we love and know! Whoever thinks of the adverts at the advertising company deserves a medal although im sure vS are paying him/her enuff!!!

That is just brilliant.

Ok, let's take a step back and compare that with that BA ad (you know the one, where the pompus business man flies around the world in business class to meet up with the wife & kid - who flew economy - followed by a orchestra). Which one is better? Which one actually gives you a clue about the product?

I rest my case, m'lud. Let's hope they air it in the UK.

Virgin do employ some of the best companies / individuals for their advertising, this one caught my eye for PE:

Great Ad.

In this prudish society I'm surprised by this being put on air. In most instances this would alienate VS to most of the bible belt. If it did air I'd bet it was just in the NE!

I don't think there is a watershed here... you can see someone blow someone elses head off with an uzi at 4pm one channel flick from the teletubbies but you can't see a naked persons bum at 11pm!

I wish there were more ads like this, the audience here still insist of descriptive ads that explain that a car has 4 wheels and an engine and chocolate tastes chocolatey!

I think a few of those bible belt(ers)[?] you were talking about, are on airliners.net and missed the actual point of the advert judging by some of their posts on the topic.

Weird - can't believe people think is is a gay ad... IANADB (deconstructionist).

It's amusing though as are some of the comments - favourite of course being "But I'm the only gay in the airbus"...

Just shows that some people (and nations) really dont get a joke- and us Brits are supposed to be the ones with a poor sense of humour! I guess all the gays are saying its rude and discriminates against them but come on its a bit of fun and i think its brilliant-there are far more insulting things on tv- i wonder if VS will release a man and woman couple version?

actually no - one or two guys seem to have a problem with it - the biggest part of the LGBTs posting seem very supportive.

The majority of the LGBT folks that have posted in that thread are under the impression that the ad's aimed at them, and they're happy about it. I highly doubt that the ad is specifically aimed at the gay community, but *shrug* who really cares? It's funny and very realistic of some "seatmates" :D

I share your view - the ad does precisely what it sets out to do - Grabs your attention and is memorable - without (yo my mind) offending.

I think it was fantastic, I wouldn't have said it was targetted at a gay audience though. Virgin's marketing people would be a lot less subtle if it was for a gay audience. ;)

Hmmmm - It is a great ad. Funny, New and Unforgettable

quote:Virgin has lost a potential customer. We 'gays' expect the same from an airline as hetrosexual people do.

This gay prefers to do business with gay friendly enterprises.

Hence, I will patronize businesses that cater to our market and avoid one that doesn't.

---- from airlers.net

But BA lost my business last Aug 2004 from the strike.
I think an airline's first job is to get there passengers to there destinations. That other airline did not. VS Rocks :)

Oh I don't know, the odd minger slips in.
Finally saw the advert today (with sound) and it is hilarious. I certainly don't take offence at it, although I take offence at very little.

Its just VS doing what they do best; having great talked about ad campaigns and just having a bit of camp fun with their operations. Loved the way you used to get Hello! on the way into the plane. I now take my own copy of Heat, although its read from cover to cover before were off the tarmac.

Hmmmm

Time for a new slogan on the planes perhaps? "I'm the only Virgin on the tarmac"? :)

Very funny advertising - their agency are excellent.

Reminds me of a Christmas Campaign when I worked in the Chester Virgin Megastore. We had printed jumpers with the campaign logo on the front - "Truly Gifted" and the Virgin logo underneath. The management were getting more then a little annoyed with all the staff putting "I'm A" stickets on above the logo.

Actually the guy in the advert reminds me of the one who sat next to me on my first long haul flight to Seattle on BA. I have no idea how I coped with that flight ... no back of seat TV's then either!!
