So here's the real thing? Do you use BD enough on an ongoing basis to warrant moving up to Silver? Will you be Silver for a year and then return to the standard ol' Blue? If so, there's not much point in my opinion chasing the status. You'd be better off improving your position in FC and earning the miles. Remember, just 40,000 miles will give you r/t to the USA in Y on VS (18,000 miles is a good chunk of this!). I think it's always better to consolidate into as few schemes as possible. Silver status isn't that special these days...

BD *S will get you access to Economy Plus on UA, whenever booking. (This is probably the biggest benefit that now remains)

If you're nowhere near VS Ag, and have any intention of flying UA over the next 12 months, I'd say go for the BD option.

As long as they remain in Star Alliance (and they have to give 12 months notice to terminate the agreement), then you're safe in 36" seating whenever booking an Economy ticket with UA - a pretty good deal for 18k miles.

I'm sorry to say but VS Ag means virtually nothing other than use of the PE check in when flying Y.
