Ryanair & mobile phones in flight

I see that Ryanair have just announced that they are going to fit their entire fleet of aircraft with equipment to allow mobile phones to be used in flight. [By the end of 2007, subject to approval].

It looks expensive though - £9.99 fixed fee for the service + your international roaming rate for the calls you make. I cannot see many "no frills" pax who have paid pennies + tax for their fares wanting to shell out a tenner to be able to use their mobile on board.

[:?] - sounds expensive, surely people on a short haul, low cost flight can cope, 40mins-2hours or so without using their mobile? And how annoying would it be with a plane full of pax all talking on their mobiles at the same time, sounds a flawed idea to me, but what do I know.

One more reason I'll avoid them until I'm forced onto their planes. (Having done my "stint" of weekly FR trips a few years back)


There's a REASON "mobile phone free" carraiges are a selling point for train companies these days. [ii]

Too right about mobile free zones, but have you noticed how many pillocks ignore it[:(!]. And they get sooo annoyed when you take their phone away and press the red button[}:)]

Ahem! I've just come off a Ryanair flight. I slung my briefcase into an overhead bin (there's a tale in that too) and on landing collected the said briefcase. Went to switch on the mobile phone and found I had left it on in-flight....

Train rage? - but can anyone tell me if it has been technically proven that using your mobile phoe on a plane can cause the aircraft to have problems.

As Chrstine has shown ( by mistake)it didnt affect her plane - and Im sure in the period when phones were required to be put into the hold luggage people are bound to have forgotten to turn them off?|

Is there a technical reason or is it just for convenience? ( or to seel airtime at £9.99 per second??[:(!])

Judging by the number of people who seem to permanently have a phone glued to their ear these days, I could see plenty of people saying "I'm on the plane, I'm sitting down...say it's a nice seat. Oh we're getting ready to move, go to go. Hi, I'm back, we're climbing now" etc etc

I'm currently in Japan and reading up on their railways.
Talking on Mobile phones is banned on all trains (except in the spaces between the carriages), though you can still use them for texting and playing games.

My previous phone had a bad habbit of switching itself back on when stuffed in my bag in the overhead locker, and on one occasion I had network welcome messages from every country between london and shanghai.

That is exactly what I mean and dread, I can see people doing it for the novelty factor (although at £9.99 and then call charges....) and with soo many kids etc with phones now too it could be awful[n], I pray to god that this is not a success and is quickly forgotten (wishful thinking though I think on my part[n])

Personally I am against it. Air travel remains the only Bastion against the spread of the mobile/cell/handy and long may that continue!

Most long-haul aircraft have credit card phones so if you really cannot be out of touch for a few hours use that.

I've only ever seen one person use a cc phone, and that was on a flight between LAS and LAX a few years back. The chap was explaining to his probation officer that he'd not appeared as required by his bail conditions because he'd gone to Vegas to marry a hostess and get Sting to record one of his songs...

OK, I realise I am rising to the bait but my so-called "loyalty" to Ryanair is because I need to fly to DUB and they offer flights at the time I need them and fares at a third of the cost of the train - and it's quicker even though it was an hour late leaving DUB last night [V]
