No, not mine! Anyone know which is the best number to contact, to ask about how best to fly one of these out out to the US for a ceremony?

We are flying out this sunday toget married in the Grand Canyon. Spoke to Virgin a few times and they insist we have to put it in the hold. My misses has bought a hard suitcase and we are putting her dress + my suit in there surrounded by tons of bubble wrap.

Where the lucky person getting hitched?

The site says you have to put such stuff in the hold - they don't have any special cases or anything then, to keep it all looking ok. Were they not able to suggest the best way of transporting is? Am surprised, I'd have thought they'd have some sort of provision in the hold - I don't know, some sort of standing up boxes or something.

The person getting married is using The Grove - I hadn't heard of it before! Who did you call and speak to, by the way?

Good luck with the wedding. Take some pix and let us all have a look!

When we went to Jamaica for my sisters wedding last Jan, we flew Air Jamaica ([n][n] never again) but tbh the were really good and let us hang up the dress in its protective suit carrier thingy in the Business Class wardbrobe as did BMI who we flew MAN-LHR with. I find it srange the VS wont allow this. Also my sister-in-law hung her dress up when flying with Thomas Cook when they got married abroad also!

Just VA customer services. Spent several hours on the phone but always the same answer. Since 9/11 they wont let you take too much in the cabin hence putting it in the hol d and just packing it very very well. Is a bummber but nothing we could do. Tried a few other airlines in case they were different but all said the same.

From the VS website ...

Q How should I take a wedding dress on my flight?

A If possible your garments should be packed into a seperate suitcase and marked 'Fragile Wedding Garments'. This will be placed in the hold in the aircraft. Alternatively, your garments can be taken into the cabin as long as they are packed into your hand luggage and fit into the specified weight and dimension requirements. We are unable to hang wedding garments in the Economy and Premium Economy cabins due to the CAA regulations.

Not sure how the current cabin baggage restrictions change this, but if you were flying Upper you used to be able to take wedding attire in a suit carrier and hang it up in the cupboard. Have seen this before myself. If not flying Upper, i think you have to take your chances with checked luggage ... and pray that it makes it!

Thanks,
Sarah

I flew with VA to St Lucia in Dec 05 and i had a big white wedding dress.I left the bag on that the dress came in from the bridal shop and folded it over and put in a separate suitcase along with veil. The check in staff at VA put a fragile sticker on it and to be honest when i arrived at our hotel I just hung it up arrived at and it was fine.:)

Mind you when i boarded the aircraft at Gatwick i noticed a woman carrying on her bridal gown (she was in econ) and the cabin staff storing it for her.Felt a bit peeved about that.[:(]

I *think* from anecdotal evidence, the official Virgin line has always been that your wedding dress, etc, must fit within the standard cabin baggage limitations; and Economy / Premium Economy don't officially have access to the Upper Class wardrobe, so, again officially, the line is that it cannot be hung up in the pointy bit. Unofficially, if there was space, I heard many occassions where they have hung up wedding dresses in the Upper Class wardrobe. Clearly the official line is there so there's no expectation of this service, since on a busy flight there just wouldn't have been room.

Now, this all changed in August with the clamp down on cabin baggage, and I doubt anyone would even be able to squeeze a wedding dress into the tiny space permitted for carry-on. The only real option now is to do as others have suggested in this thread. Get yourself a strong, hard-sided case, carefully pack the dress in there and bubble-wrap is your friend (anyone who watches Brainiac will remember the only survivor of the 'throw the telly out the back of a moving van' test was the one packed in bubble wrap!)
