TSA & Laptops

I bought one of those Targus "Sleeve Skin" covers for my laptop earlier on today to protect it from the other stuff I put into my carry-on that will scratch the laptop case.

For those who don't know / have not seen them, the Sleeve Skin is basically a neoprene rubber (thin wetsuit like material) zip-up bag to put your laptop in. My laptop pretty much fills the bag - so I could not put anything in it with the laptop [apart from say a thin pad of paper] without it showing from the outside via a bulge in the bag.

Does anyone know if the TSA let you put laptops through the X-Ray screening in these Sleeve Skin bags, or do they insist that you remove it from this as well?

Depends on the airport ! Heathrow yes ... Newark Liberty no

In the US (where the TSA operate - they're not TSA in LHR ) definitely not. I've seen many people, at all different airports, having to remove laptops from sleeves.

Yes twice in the last year at London Gatwick.

Yep out of the sleeve and powered on was my experience leaving LHR and coming back thru LAX.

Got worried when they got me to turn my iPod on and it froze!!! All fine in the end though..

I've never had to power anything on, but what if the battery is dead?

At LHR they normally either ask me to power my lappie up or take the battery out. Annoyingly it always seems I choose the wrong standby / off option so best to always shutdown just in case.
