I must say, of all the destinations they could have chosen, Dubai is a bit of a surprise.

It is a while since I have been, but a lot of airlines already fly there from London.

Yeah, seems an odd decision to me:

Most people in my experience are holiday-makers so spending the least amount of time possible getting from A to B is not of such importance.
Yields to DXB are quite low; it's one of the cheapest (relatively) destinations in the VS network.
UC has always been fairly empty on my three flights to/from DXB.
