Disabled permits in the USA

More queries from me again I'm afraid. Has anyone successfully applied for a temporary Blue (disabled)Badge for use in any of the states in the US (Californaia in particular)?
Our proposed summer trip next year to California and Vegas will include a family member (my elderly-ish step-father)who due to several significant health problems has an EU Blue (disabled) badge.The state of Nevada says they recognise and accept badges issued by other states/ countries (although I've no idea if in practice they do) but the same does not seen to apply to California.I've had a look at the CA website and it seems you can apply for a temporary permit for which there is a small fee and submission of paperwork (which seems to be geared towards residents of other US states). There is no website address for me to contact only a PO box in Sacramento.Has anyone out there successfully managed to obtain a temporary permit? If so, should I be trying to sort this out now or nearer the time?

I recently applied for a temporary permit for Florida and they couldn't have been more helpful. We had the choice of applying by post or fax and paying by credit/debit card or International money order. We applied by fax to the local tax office and paid by credit card ($15 permit fee and $2 CC fee). We faxed a copy of MIL's passort and Blue Badge for her proof of entitlement and a copy of my passport to support my CC payment. The tax office called me on my mobile to check our departure date to see if I wanted to collect it or have it posted out, we chose post and it arrived 3/4 days later. On our letter we asked for the permit to be valid to the end of feb but the lady who called said they were 3 months only, but if I called back nearer the time they had made a note on our file that we could have a free renewal as we visited twice in 6 months.

Did a little research on this. California requires the registration number of the vehicle in which the placard will be displayed.

From experience I know that it is difficult at best to contact a DMV office, though the website is http://www.dmv.ca.gov. What I suggest is that when you arrive in the US, contact an office of the California Highway Patrol and ask the officers there whether it is okay for you to use your EU permit on CA highways (the CHP patrols CA state and federal Interstate highways). They will know and they will be courteous.

If you must have a CA-issued permit you can visit one of their offices which are located in many cities throughout the state.

Nothing is easy in California. You even have to pay to enter some of the beach parking lots! Anyway, if you can use your Arizona permit that will save a lot of hassle.
