Emirates have just placed the single largest order for new aircraft ever. Wait for it, 120 A350's, 11 A380's, 12 777ER's for an estimated US$34.9Billion at list price. I hope they got a good discount though:D
First A350's to be delivered 2014 with RR engines
A380 with EA GP7's
B777's with GE90

Sorry to be picky but....

Its not the single largest ever order. The honor belongs to FR who ordered 150 738s in one go. The EK order is only 143 a/c and even then it is two seperate orders, one being made with Airbus for 131 a/c and one with Boeing for 12 a/c.

If you are talking in terms of monetary value- then yes it is.

No they haven't and they won't be, IMHO, after this announcement. They have pretty much gone with the 350 over the 787.

What is interesting about this announcement, from a VS point of view, is this....

EK ordered 380s (like VS). They then announced they would be looking at both the 748 and 380 for a different order (as VS are doing). EK have now gone with the 380 (much to the shock of those in the business who thought it was going to be the 748). So, considering VS are doing the same as EK, I wouldnt be at all surprised to see a 380 order (bearing in mind the fleet commonalty with the already ordered 380s) from VS to replace the LGW fleet.

EK had the sense NOT to take the A346's unlike VS. In most way's not a realistic comparison as EK have massive buying power & make an excellent profit, VS make lots of noise but often fail to follow it up.

As for 787 & 747-8, never say never. The 747-8i is an excellent for some of the proposed EK routes!!!!

EK is so fickle anyway; at the moment they have many variants of a/c that are designed for similar routes.

fickle (adj) changeable, especially in one's loyalties

-Chambers Dictionary

Given that EK consistently fluctuates between airbus and boeing, often purchasing directly competing a/c from both manufacturers, I would say that "fickle" describes the airline's attitude perfectly.

Four engines for long haul, buy British, the list is a long one!!!! My point being that EK are in a position to play the two off on price & probably save milions doing so. They are an airline & just get on with being one & don't try to be political (how can an airline flying a fleet of aircraft ever really be seen as "green" which is the latest bandwagon VS have jumped on).
