The International Herald Tribune has done a great article about how FF schemes can actually make airlines money.

One paragraph that caught my eye was: Delta's SkyMiles members had 510 billion unused miles in their accounts at the end of last year, while the MileagePlus program offered by United Air Lines had 488 billion unused miles and the AAdvantage plan of American Airlines had 613 billion.

No wonder reward trips are hard to find. [:D]

That is interesting - I do recall stories about how AA were trying to value the AAdvantage programme with a view to selling it. And it was given a potential price tag of many a buck.
