Can anyone recommend a top notch Miami hotel?
Where abouts? If SoBe then I've stayed at The Tides a few times ... the rooms are fantastically sized, even the standards, and all face the ocean wih marvellous light and comfort. The bar is tops, sipping a drink or having a meal on the terrace is a great way to spend an evening, and you're in the middle of it all and walkable to all the local bars, restaurants etc. Plus with only 40 or so rooms it's not bustling with teenagers and tearaways [:p].

There's a plane at JFK, to fly you back from far away
all those dark and frantic transatlantic miles

How long for and waht sort of hotel do you want - 'nice business' or 'resort'? And whereabouts?
Personally I really liked the JW Marriott (Downtown) for a night or two pre-cruise, but the location wont be everyone's cup of tea...
Rotz Biscayne Bay as nice if you want to be somewhere a bit quieter (a bit of distance from the action...)
Boo

Have not a clue what part as long as I can find the apartment where Tony Montana's unfortunate brother came to a bloody end, think its on south beach and I never drive on the wrong side of the road[:D]

Well, then SoBe it is, as I'm not sure I'd want to stay in downtown Miami without a car ...
I'd second the Tides for a location a bit more central to the action on Ocean Drive, though you have to cross the street to get to the beach ... [;)]
The Delano is good, and I like the Raleigh's pool. They are a bit north of Ocean Drive, on Collins, have direct beach access, nothing that can't be overcome with a nice walk along the beach.

I have been told that the Lowes is very nice, my own choice is the Fontainebleau, however, I know the president of the company so I get taken care off there and the place is under a lot of construction right now, next year I would say yes, this year probably not.
Also if your looking for something a little off the beaten path I can say that The Pillars at new river sound is a great little hotel, the rooms are a little small, but the service is great.

Aaagh! Not being blessed with the decisiveness of dear old jp, I'm struggling to choose a hotel for the Miami leg of our upcoming Florida trip.
We'll be a party of 5 - myself, the-now Mrs mdvipond and a (by time of travel) 3 year old mdvipond jr., ably assisted by the Senior Ponds. We're staying in Miami for 2 nights (the first being the day we fly in from LHR) before heading up to the Land of the Mouse. Got it down to the Four Seasons or the Mandarin Oriental. But which to go for...?

Of the two I'd go for the MO. Neither are in the thick of the action though and a bit removed from the Miami vibe IMHO.

After doing a bit of research, we're intending to visit South Beach rather than stay there (the area looks like it could be a little 'faded', even tatty?), so the location of either hotel suits - especially for such a short stay.
We've done Four Seasons in the US and Hong Kong before, but never stayed at a MO. Maybe that's reason enough to give it a try...

Granted the area is a bit jaded in parts but not so long ago huge areas of South Beach were due to be razed to the ground (and were inhabited by the homeless and local wildlife).South Beach has a unique feel with few homogenous type bulidings.Make sure you do spend some time there and on the beach (which junior will love as it's nice clean soft sand [:)]).

We stayed in the Hotel Mia @ MIA Airport (was 5 years ago!) and it was great, not too expensive, pool, views and down in the lift to departures or to your car for a day out.
It was good enough for the family to want to go back again.

As if it wasn't hard enough to choose between two hotels, you have to make me start looking at South Beach again! Damn you, you evil temptress... OK, since we only have one full day in Miami and since SOBE is the only area we really want to visit, I guess it's worth looking at again. So, anyone got any views on Loews Miami Beach?

Evil temptress?? I wish!!
OK Mr mdvipond, whilst I've not stayed at the Loews I've reasonably recently stayed at the Doubletree Surfcomber (just down the road) and have been to SoBe/Miami beach four times (and will be heading back from there the day you arrive).
If you've never been to Miami, want to see SoBe (and have limited time) staying there would make sense. The Loews lobby looks nice and the hotel is a focal point in the area. It is right on the beach and is in the 'thick of the action ' but upmarket enough not to appeal to the springbreaker types.Staying in SoBe means you don't need to use the car or find parking (although all the hotels charge outrageous prices for valet park).I love the atmosphere in SoBe and the architecture is great. Loads of decent places to eat at night too (and have a mojito or two[:D]). Sorry if I've complicated things[:I]

Very well. I'm convinced (but just a little miffed that I'm going to have wait for another jolly to try out a MO). Loews it is. I just hope you don't have to wait too long for your commission cheque from the Miami Beach Tourist Board...
I'll try to remember to wave to you as we come in and you go out of MIA!

Mdvipond,
The Lowes SOBE is our choice when in Miami because we always travel with the kiddos, we stayed there 4 nights this past Jan. I would request a room in the main tower so you are central to everything, they bought the hotel next door and have refurbished it and it is now part of the hotel but a seprate block on its own if you get my drift. The corner ocean view suites are lovely and we fitted in 2 adults and 2 kids just fine so you, Mrs Mdvipond and little un would have loads of room. The pool is fantastic, and its right on the beach, (bit annoyed that they charge you $10 each for a beach chair though) all the staff are brilliant with kids so jnr will be spoilt rotten, there is also a good kids club/nanny service. Jnr will get a welcome pack of goodies and milk and cookies before bed, I think the Lowes is definatley the most child friendly hotel in Miami, and your right on top of Lincoln rd Mall too [:)]

Not quite[:I]after a frenzy of cancellations we now have 3 paid nights at the Conrad and a pocket full of $s for cab fare to get around. The joy of a last minute change of heart chasing HH diamond renewal.
Oh and at a rate of less than £100 a night inc tax [y]

Thanks for that Ptarmigan. Wonderful advice, handy info, much appreciated. We booked Loews on Monday and - coincidentally - plumped for the ocean view corner suites. Nice to know our choice was a good 'un!
jp - I had you down as the strong, silent, decisive type. Imagine my disappointment...
