Very interesting article in The Times, referring to the new archive which includes details of old airline adverts.

One which stands out is 'Fly Your Male First Class' (!) and the Virgin Atlantic one where an UpperClass flight was 429.00 each way, while Economy is 129.00 each way. So no change for economy fares then... ;)

That's actually pretty interesting.

1. 129 Pounds one way - 259 Pounds return...in 1984!! Virgin has a sale on now and you can get to NYC for 298 pounds. Wow. How can we possibly complain about the prices of flights these days?!
2. The price of the Saturday edition of the Times that this advert appeared in was 20p....its now over 1 Pound. If a newspaper has increased in price by over 500% how can a Virgin flight from LHR to NYC have only increased 15%, especially when you look at price of oil now vs 1984?!?!
3. (Extra) Space Class!! lmao - but 'Guarantees space to spread out with an empty seat next to you'. WHAT?? How are they guaranteeing an empty seat next to you?!

I remember in the 90s that was what a lot of airlines did for passengers paying 'full Economy' fares on domestic flights. And DanAIr did it I think on European flights. They just don't sell the middle seat. So if there were 5 rows of 3+3 they would sell 20 seats instead of 30.
