I seem to remember that in the employee's new contract there was a 5 year no strike clause, it will be interesting to see if management decides to play hard ball, or in typical tradition just surrender.

I suppose coming from an UK POV, unions have lost the power that they had until the early 1980s. In europe, they're still very strong and influential. It probably needs the 'credit crunch' to force unions to realise that there are difficult times and it will not be possible to save every job without the threat of all jobs being lost.
