Text from VS Amex re foreign travel.

Just had a text from VS Amex asking me to text the dates the cards on my account will be used abroad.

If it is genuinely from MBNA I don't have a problem with this.

The number received from showed as 83838.

Clearly I am not the first person to be suspicious.

Anyone got any thoughts?

I have tried ringing MBNA, but gave up after the fourth automatic menu option list!!

How would they even know you are going away?

Personaly I now use the message function on my VS AMEX card online account to send them a message when I am going to be away. That way I have some proof that I told them and their acknowledgement that I told them.

I would call them, it's just not a good idea to go the text route.

Had the same txt myself which I thought was down to using the VS amex to pay for flights we are on tomorrow. Didn't reply but rang instead as I always do, they have a new voice menu which got me straight through. They confirmed the txt service as a reminder to people to let them know you are going abroad. Just a coincidence mine was the day before we flew

I also received the same text and I am not flying until September. I decided to ignore it as I have told them that I have a home in the US and am back and forth throughout the year. I would never answer a text asking for personal details.

Like tonty, I too e-mail MBNA to tell them I am going abroad; I always get an acknowledgement. I go the same route with MasterCard too. Never had a text from either though [:?]

Whilst I am all for security, I think someone with a little brains could have thought of some better wording[:(!]

For example ' as the summer holiday period approaches, just like cancelling the milk, do not forget to inform MNBA that you will be using your card abroad'

Then we would all feel secure

I must look for that on my account - or is it the 'contact us' bit???Something more secure???

easiest way to tell you where it is is ...

log into your account and the little window opens as normal.

At the top left is the VS logo etc

Look to the top right and there are 4 links highlighted in blue

The messagage function is the third one (the last one on the very right is 'log off')

Click on it and then the message options appear. Select the type of message from the menu then type your message

No need to tell them your account number etc as the message is being sent securly from your account.

They reply the same way - when there is a reply I think the 'my message' tab turns red.

I called as soon as I recieved the text and was told yes it was an offical text from MBNA and to go ahead and text my dates back.
She said its a new thing and they had all been informed to assure customers should they inquire.
