New York Accomodation October/November

This may be a long shot, but thought I'd give it a try anyway...

I'm off to New York for a month 24 October - 21 November and I've just heard back from Cornell (where I'll be based) today and they're not going to be able to provide me with housing. So, I was wondering if anyone had any cheap (or cheapish) solutions? Ideally Upper East Side, room to myself but don't really mind sharing other amenities if it brings the cost down.

I'd recommend posting on the TripAdvisor NYC Forum. Beware though, there's a lot of scammers out there if you go for a short let place.
