MGM given deadline re Harmon Tower

Clark County give CityCentre developers until August 15th to come up with plan for either saving or demolishing the Harmon Tower.

Well MGM Resorts says it will demolish Harmon Tower! The deadline imposed by Clark County expired yesterday and MGM Resorts have decided to apply for permission to demolish rather than strengthen the Harmon Tower in the CityCenter Project!

In addition it is a popular destination among V-Flyers and having this information will help them make choices regarding hotels as they may not want to stay near a site where rubble is being removed

They are pretty good at blowing these things up in the US but agree if I owned a neigbouring building I'd start to get a little concerned !

That said normal demolition techniques are still not risk free and could take an absolute age.

I remember watching a programme about the demolishing of Casino's about a year ago and it was very fascinating. It was a family firm mainly women and they took about a year to do it and it showed them going floor by floor, putting the explosive in, it was special explosive to make it do whatever they do with it.

It was one of the Casino's on the strip can't remember the name of it and when it came down it was truly spectular, obviously lots of dust but it missed all the other buildings.

I think I saw the same programme - they are a regular feature on Channel 5. One week they show a programme about building big things and the next its a programme about demolishing a big building !

@mallin, I think probably the "special explosive" to which you refer is a "linear shaped charge" which is not actually a type of explosive but (in demolition) rather it refers to the way a charge is shaped and placed to direct the force of the explosion to do a particular job. It is often a technique used to cut the steel reinforcing rods (rebars), once they have been exposed, in order to help direct how the building collapses.

Preping a building of this size and proximity to others for an "implosion" will take several months. It should be a really spectacular show when it eventually happens.
