Article in today's Financial Mail

The new BA boss is saying that another 3,500 jobs will go, but also;
"Walsh is keen to reshape the airline's short-haul business to compete with rival low-cost carriers. He has been looking at ending business class tickets and introducing no-frills services on some short-haul routes."

Woah, that's bad news.

IMHO, I think it's a bad idea as most revenue comes from the front end and in any case, they can regulate the number of biz seats they have so they never have to lose money on open seats that way.

Cheers,

Well Willie Walsh cut most of the business seats on the Aer Lingus short haul routes, and introduced no frills services. For many of those routes business class made no sense at all. At one stage I flew it on the ORK-LHR run with a consolidated UC fare. Basically for a hugely inflated price I got a newspaper and a hot breakfast. Since then I've learned to book them separately and then notify VS of the connection and if I wish, the newspaper and breakfast option is available for Û8

If the Club Europe service I experienced last weekis anything to go by we won't be missing much. I am on BA this Friday so will ask the crew how they feel about it.

I agree with you,but there are still alot of PAX connecting through LHR/LGW in J,with BA you expect a J service,even if it's just 4-8 seats on the plane..this can only be bad for BA.

Well, it appears that anybody flying from LGW will no longer be provided with a meal, anyway.

(Evidently one of Willie's new initiatives... [xx(])

"Its new chief executive Willie Walsh said passengers departing from the airline's loss-making base at Gatwick may not receive an inflight meal as part of their ticket.

Instead, they may be served just a drink and perhaps a light snack as the airline attempts to cut costs.

'Maybe meal is the wrong phrase to use,' said Mr Walsh, when asked about the type of on-board food passengers flying from Gatwick will receive. 'Passengers will get a product,' he said, but refused to go further.

'It will be different to the service we're currently offering,' added Mr Walsh, 43, who took over yesterday from Sir Rod Eddington, who is the Government's new transport tzar."
