Afternoon all.

We're paying a flying visit to NYC on the way back from MCO at the end of October. We've visited New York numerous times before, so doing just the two nights this time; we're looking for something 4-5 star, central with - if possible - a 'child friendly' bar (no good relaxing after a day's sightseeing if Tizer has to sit on the back step with a lemonade and a bag of crisps). Any suggestions will be most welcome...

I can recommend the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, reasonable price, reasonable size rooms, great service. 1 block from Times Square and not far from Central Park. Tour buses on the door step.

I've been with young children (a 4 y/o and 1 y/o) and the hotel was great. (They still remember the pancakes at breakfast and want to have them again!)

I wasn't fortunate enough to head up to the bar, alone or accompanied :( but maybe tripadvisor could help you here.
Or I'll find out this summer when we return.... any excuse to head for the bar.. ;)

It may be slightly out of your way if you're going to be doing sightseeing in Midtown, but I always stay at the Trump Soho when there for work (and actually just checked out this morning...). Has a nice indoor/outdoor bar complete with swimming pool up on the 6th floor, I've seen kids there before, although not been there with my own ones.

I can recommend the Distrikt Hotel, stayed there last year, and liked it so much am going back in May. It's bar is in the restaurant area with plenty of seating, so couldn't see there being a problem taking Tizer in to chill out after all that sightseeing. :-)

I would also recommend the Hilton Garden Inn in Times Square. Whilst not terribly luxurious, it provides all you need for a short stay in NYC. There is no bar actually within the Hotel, but La Pigalle Restaurant, which is attached to the Hotel, has a nice bar. The Restaurant itself serves very good, reasonably-priced food, and the buffet breakfast is extremely good. Staff are friendly and they provide free coffee/tea during the morning, and nice cookies at most times of the day!

I will definitely stay there again on my next visit to NYC.

Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, stayed there Jan 2011 during a visit to NYC.
Agree that it's not terribly luxurious (I'd probably rate it about 3*) but very nice, clean and comfortable and very well located for Times Square, perfectly adequate for a short visit.
I'd happily stay there again.......

Not sure what the law is in NYC re kiddies and proper bars - might be different from a restaurant though.

They would probbaly think letting Tizer walk through Times's Square toting an AK47 as being perfectly acceptable behaviour but let the poor thing even have a a sniff of a beer mat will result in total moral failure of the entire nation.

Did the Hilton Garden Inn used to be a Day's Inn? If so I stayed there about 10 yearsd ago. Godawful place full of student tour groups (slamming doors and screaming at 2.00AM etc), the lifts and hallways smelled of boiled cabbage and the shelf in the bathroom fell off the wall as soon as I opened the door of the room (repair was a liberal application of not very well applied duct tape).

I'm sure it has improved since then though ... (but yes it is a good location)

Whilst I cannot offer any suggestions regarding NYC Hotels, the need to be able to access here will, I suspect, be paramount ):

Bonjour from the Royalton Hotel - my fave New York place still, great location, lovely rooms ... I'll ask downstairs about drinks and children (!) but the whole lobby is the bar so I don't see you'll have a problem!

That's what happens in all New York hotels ... :0

Kid-friendly, I'd probably look at higher up Midtown as being a little more sedate, maybe the Four Seasons, or the Hotel 57 for a bit cheaper option. If location is of interest, in this day and age I'd probably give the Standard a try, even though I can see how if you've been a regular at the Royalton there'd be little reason to change ...

Thank you all for your very helpful replies. I'm currently looking at the London, Muse, Royalton and Four Seasons. I'd like to go for the latter (love the Four Seasons!), but they're currently coming out quite a bit more expensive than the rest - around £1600 for two nights.

You should consider Le Parker Meridien.
On a "what you get for what you pay" basis, it probably ranks as one of the top choices, but it isn't cheap.

Or the Mandarin Oriental if money is not an issue....

I once stayed at the Radisson Martinique on Broadway which was quite nice. That was several years ago so I don't know what it's like now but there was always big posh cars outside! It wasn't a dump, but it want the Plaza. Just somewhere in the middle that's in a good location and reasonably priced.

I remember seeing VS crew in the lobby there too. (not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing!!)

Hilton NY on 6th Ave, been here a few times and enjoyed it everytime. A fab location, children friendly and as I have just said on another post, they have just dropped their prices.

As you know I am a big fan of London NYC hotel, stayed at The Muse in a balcony room last year, saw kiddies there downstairs and for the size of balcony suite quite reasonable, though the sight of me sunbathing in my ausibums might have frightened the surrounding office blocks lol
