I am sure you all remember the Ash Cloud (and it's associated record thread on here).

I just thought I would relate something that has happened and wondered if anyone else had this.

I was 'stuck' in Orlando - my 11 day holiday turned into a 23 day holiday - which I thought was great, but Mrs S was less than happy about it (she even mentioned getting a boat home at one time !).

I claimed through VS and they paid most of my out of pocket expenses - bit slow, but understandable in view of the number of claims they must have dealt with.

For the items etc not covered by VS I claimed on my travel insurance, but it was rejected - normal get out clauses etc. Wasn't too fussed though, as I just put it down to a cheap extension to my holiday.

Yesterday, I had a phone call from the insurance company - at first I thought it was wone of those PPI mis-selling calls which really irritate me. They said no it wasn't, confirmed my name and address after a slight preamble and quoted my Insurance Company etc.

They then said that the Ombudsman had found against the Insurance Companies who initially rejected claims under certain circumstances. He confirmed that there were 3 of us at the time and not only have they got to pay out the 'delay' element they have to pay interest on the amount as well.

He said I should be getting a cheque for £750 (£250 each) PLUS £44 interest.

I was then a bit cheeky and asked about the other elements and would they be paid, even though I could not remember what they were - it was slightly tongue in cheek though. He said 'no, it is just the delay element'

I had no idea that someone had followed up with the Ombudsman - whoever they were I owe a big Thank You.

Happy Days (when the cheque arrives)

Thought those of you who were also affected may want to know as you may be due something.

I can't see it as any form of 'scam' as he did not have any other details other than my name and address which is on the electoral register anyway.

Just a quick update on this.

It was NOT a scam :D

Received cheque today for £810 (had extra interest !)and the covering letter said '.......as a result of the Financial Ombudsman Service's ruling, claims related to volcanic eruptions should be deemed as "poor weather" and therefore considered under the Travel Delay section of your policy.'

So, any of you who were originally rejected by your insurers may be getting something in the post.

We were stuck in Shanghai for an additional 6 days due to the ash cloud. Our insurer basically said 'tough' at the time, but having read this post I've contacted them this morning and they'll be calling me back later in the day. Here's hoping for some good news!

To add to that the European Court of Justice found against Ryanair when they refused to refund expenses incurred following the ash cloud paving the way for similar actions
